    Common Marketing Interview Questions to Expect

    Marketing companies look for different qualities and skills in interview candidates, depending on the position, qualifications and company goals. After submitting an application, resume and cover letter, the interview is your chance to further demonstrate your abilities, in addition to your personality. You can also use the interview to better understand your prospective employer’s expectations for the role and how you might fit in with their team.

     

    In this article, we explore some common marketing interview questions and provide examples to help you prepare effective answers.

    Here are the top eight questions to expect in a marketing interview.

    1. Why are you pursuing a career in marketing?

    This question is designed to be open-ended so interviewers can get to know your industry passions and discover how you became interested in marketing. For an effective answer, briefly describe what led you to marketing, such as:

    • Subjects or activities that piqued your interest while you were in school
    • Previous jobs that exposed you to marketing
    • Certifications you’ve earned
    • Marketing-related work history
    • Mentors or industry figures who inspire you

    Example: “I’ve always had a creative side, and I discovered my passion for marketing while I was in school. I started creating promotional materials and websites as a professional hobby. Then I completed an internship with a marketing company, which gave me valuable real-world experience in creative development and campaigns. Additionally, I have learned a lot about marketing by reading up on famous marketers such as Seth Godin, Neil Patel and Gary Vaynerchuk.”

    2. Which social media platforms are you familiar with?

    Depending on the role and company you’re interviewing for, your prospective employer might expect you to be competent in using all of the major social media platforms. If you’re familiar with niche platforms, you should talk about your proficiency with them as well. Showcasing your knowledge of social media and how it impacts your work demonstrates that you can use these tools to increase audience engagement and brand awareness.

    Example: “I regularly use social media in my personal life and have professional profiles online. In my internship, I learned to use a wide range of functions applicable to marketing, such as communicating and collaborating with other users, scheduling posts, using monitoring and analytics tools and integrating different social media platforms to increase brand awareness and online presence.”

    3. What are the three most important skills for a marketing career?

    This is your opportunity to discuss your valuable skills and experiences. It helps to reference skills that were mentioned in the job listing that you also possess. Some skills to consider discussing include:

    • Analytics and data report programs
    • Search engine optimization (SEO)
    • Storytelling and campaigns

    Example: “I think a marketer must be knowledgeable about SEO because it is one of the most effective ways to boost organic traffic. The ability to tell compelling stories and manage campaigns is also a valuable skill. It enables a marketer to connect with the target audience on a deeper level and use the right strategies to cater to their specific needs and preferences. Finally, data analytics and reporting are indispensable in the digital age as they allow a marketer to evaluate and understand the wide-ranging behaviors of today’s smarter consumers.”

    4. How familiar are you with our company’s target market?

    This question commonly occurs in a marketing manager interview and helps prospective employers decide whether a candidate has the passion, skills and drive to market to their target audiences. 

    If you do not have previous experience dealing with your prospective employer’s target market, research the company’s website, recent news releases and social media to better understand its products, services and target audience. Then, find out what strategies the company is using to reach that particular market. If you are familiar with the target audience, let the interviewer know you have experience reaching out to that segment and implementing some of the strategies the company is using. Mention the following target audience information in your answer:

    • Location
    • Age 
    • Gender
    • Ethnic background
    • Income level
    • Marital status
    • Preferred channels

    Example: “I see that your company’s target market is mainly made up of single females aged 12 to 25 who reside in Atlanta, Georgia. They belong to the lower-income group and different ethnic groups. Your brand focuses on providing customers unique, convenient shopping experiences in addition to quality products. Your target audience is highly invested in Instagram influencers, and you can engage in fun, uplifting conversations over social media.”

    5. If a customer writes a negative review of a product we’re marketing, how would you respond?

    You can use this question to showcase your critical thinking and problem-solving skills, in addition to effective communication when customer engagement. To answer this question well, describe a time you turned a less-than-satisfactory customer experience into a positive one.

    For this situational question and others, consider using the Star technique. Discuss the situation you were in and what task you needed to complete to be successful. Outline the actions you took, and describe the results of your efforts.

    Example: “In my previous position, I often handled customer outreach and had the occasional negative review. One customer was not satisfied with her service and said she wanted a refund. I first investigated the topic of her comment, which was that the app kept crashing. I reviewed our updates and noticed that during her time of service, we found a bug causing these crashes.

    After speaking to my manager about how to alleviate the customer’s satisfaction issue, I asked the customer to reach out to our customer support email address so I could handle her issue. I emailed her and thanked her for her feedback. Then I informed her that we updated the app to be more compatible with her device. I encouraged her to open the app and use it to see if her issue had been fixed. Then I offered her a free week of service to make up for any inconvenience the bug may have caused.

    She responded and said that the app did seem to work better and the crashing had stopped. She gladly accepted the free week of service and thanked me for addressing her issue. In these situations, I always remain polite and respectful to uphold the company’s professional image. I prefer to have the customer reach out directly to the support team so any solutions can be discussed more privately.”

     

    6. How do you manage the launch of a new product?

    You can use this question to demonstrate your leadership experience. Show how you planned, tested and successfully launched a campaign. This can include high-level strategy or small details that made the launch a good one. The entire process should include the following steps:

    • Define the target audience.
    • Determine how to reach the target audience.
    • Understand the product and the problems it can solve.
    • Know the buying process.
    • Develop a strategic plan.
    • Create a timeline for the project.
    • Form a product launch team.

    Example: “I begin the process by identifying and understanding the target audience and their buying process before selecting the right strategies to reach them. I also evaluate the product thoroughly and the solutions it provides for the target consumers. Then, I can create a strategic plan to attract and engage the intended buyers, gain feedback from them and assess the risks involved.

    After I have developed an effective plan, I set the most timely launch date and establish a clear timeline for campaign deadlines. Then, I take stock of the necessary resources and people needed for a successful launch, and I form a project team made up of department leaders who meet regularly to discuss progress, identify challenges and come up with the appropriate solutions for any issues that arise. I also ask those team members for feedback on the plan to find any areas that can be improved or streamlined.”

    7. How do you stay up-to-date with the latest marketing trends and techniques?

    Here, discuss how you are invested in your industry and what resources you use to continually learn more about trends and effective strategies. List technologies and trends that marketers are currently adopting, and cite the publications that you read to learn this information. Consider also mentioning any career-related extracurriculars you’re involved in to keep your knowledge current, such as:

    • Enrolling in training courses or seminars
    • Reading industry publications and blogs
    • Attending marketing, advertising or digital media conferences

    Example: “I spend time learning about the latest technologies and trends in the marketing industry. I am subscribed to several marketing blogs and newsletters that I read on my commute to work. I am also taking an online course on social media strategy to see what current marketers are doing about the changing algorithms on many platforms. In that course, I’ve learned that an increasing number of marketers are incorporating social media, chatbots, interactive video content and voice search into their strategies."

    8. What makes you stand out from other candidates applying for this position?

    This is your chance to highlight the unique skills, traits and experience you bring. When mentioning special skills and traits, focus on how they can be beneficial to the company. Examples of abilities and traits that can help you stand out include:

    • High level of creativity
    • Leadership qualities
    • Negotiation and persuasion skills
    • Presentation skills
    • Self-motivation
    • Ability to stay calm and focused under pressure

    If you are an expert in a specific type of work that’s related to marketing, you should talk about it, too. Some examples include:

    • Web analytics

    Example: “I have great presentation skills, and I am an extraordinary storyteller with the ability to remain composed in front of a large number of people. Also, I have substantial knowledge and experience in web analytics. My familiarity with popular analytics tools, such as Google Analytics, Spring Metrics and Woopa, can be useful in helping your company monitor and evaluate web traffic and devising appropriate marketing strategies."
